What does the evaluation look for?
- • What is the commercial potential of your book?
- • What level of copyediting will be required?
- • How appropriate is your style for your target audience and genre?
- • What problems might arise in the structure, flow, and organization of your book?
For nonfiction:
- • Have you demonstrated credibility in the subject area?
- • Have you presented the material in an attractive, consistent, and professional manner?
- • Have you included appropriate documentation, footnotes, sources, and other references?
For fiction:
- • Is the basic premise interesting, believable, and unique?
- • Are your characters believable and well developed?
- • Is the dialogue authentic and effective?
What do I get?
You will receive a written evaluation with comments and recommendations on how to best prepare your book for success in its particular market. We will also include a sample of your work that has been edited at the recommended level of copyediting so you can see what that entails. An Acquisitions Editor will follow up with you to discuss the evaluation and answer any questions you may have about the recommendations.
How do I get started?
You can submit your manuscript in Word format (.doc or .docx). We will send you an email confirming your submission and letting you know when you can expect a completed evaluation.
Since we only perform the free Editorial Evaluation on a sample of the manuscript, we cannot guarantee that we will find all the potential problems. If you choose to publish with us, it is possible that during our full copyedit of your manuscript we may find that your manuscript would benefit from a higher level of editing. If you would like a separate, complete content evaluation of your entire manuscript, please indicate your interest in this option when submitting your manuscript for the initial free evaluation.
